While a picture is worth a thousand words, capturing moments on video really allows you to relive the experience all over again. In this unit, we will develop the skills to become better at using a camera and editing video clips. We will also be learning useful information about video characteristics and distribution methods. This type of knowledge and skill can be useful in many different fields of study including communications, marketing, television production, and others. Whether you're an aspiring Hollywood director or just an amateur videographer, this unit will be useful and interesting.
The software we will be learning to create video productions is Adobe Premiere Pro. It is a non-linear, timeline based program that is highly powerful, yet rather easy to use. It works seamlessly with other Adobe programs, like Photoshop and After Effects (a video animation creator). We will be practicing some very useful tools and features that will help you create amazing video productions. However, we will only be learning a small representation of what this software is fully capable of doing.
The content about video production is diverse and can seem very technical at times, but it is very necessary to operate in a professional setting. Things happen very quickly on set of a production, so it's important to understand technical terms and how they are applied in a real-world workplace. We will learn a lot during this unit - including camera techniques, shot composition, equipment and cable types, and common video file types and their characteristics.

Projects
Shooting TechniquesA quick way to tell if a video production is of professional quality or done by an amateur is the use of proper shot composition and camera movement techniques. In this project, you will learn about each type of shot and get practice collecting each one. Pair up with one of your classmates.
After the class has gone over the common shot compositions and camera movements, find a partner. You will be working in groups of two for this project. As a team, decide on a theme for your video that will incorporate all the camera shots and movements. Collect an example of each technique we learned in class. Download the Premiere Project Shell and import your photos from the iPads onto your classroom computer. Place the correct example into the shell at the corresponding titlethat describes each one. Make sure your photo or video is edited to usable video and the frame size fills the screen. Finally, add a background song to make your video more interesting to the audience. You may use your cell phones. After you have finished your project, save it as a Premiere Project file with the last names of each group member + technique. Export the media using the H.264 encoder with theApple TV 480p setting with the same name (ex: pettyfursetechnique.MP4). |

Jazz VideoTo get started in Premiere, you are going to create a music video that will help you learn some basic tools and features. You have been hired as a video editor by the Blues Festival. They want you to create a video using still images that will promote Jazz music. The images should change on the beat of the song. Download all of the files on the right.
Listen to the jazz music and take notice of the constant beat. You will have a new jazz image appear at each one of these music beats. Go on-line and find images that relate to jazz. Count the beats of the song to determine how many images you will need. Editing video to the beat of music is a basic skill that is used in all levels of video production.Remember to adjust scale and position on each image so that it fills the entire screen. As you work, save your project as a Premiere Project file (.PRPROJ) and name it last name +first initial + jazz. Export the media using the H.264 encoder and the Apple TV 480p setting with the same name (ex: pettywjazz.MP4).
