Attractive and descriptive audio can make or break any type of digital media production. It is used in a large variety of real-world environments, from creating radio voice-over advertisements to producing original music tracks. In any situation, audio helps establish moods, attract listeners, and please the ear. In order to create effective audio productions, it is important to learn proper creating and editing techniques, as well as establish technical information like equipment recognition and common file type characteristics. This unit should be very useful and applicable, and also fun and motivating.
The audio editor we will be using to create our audio productions is Adobe Audition. It uses a timeline-based layout that offers an extensive built-in music library, waveform view editing, and a large variety of pre-determined audio filters. The interface and tool terminology of Audition closely resembles the type of controls and editing techniques that professionals would use when mixing and recording industry-standard audio productions.

Projects
Creating or editing audio skills can be applied in many different workplace scenarios. We will being by learning the basic tools and features of Adobe Audition while creating promotional radio advertisements. Then we will try out our music production skills designing music albums in a group project. Finally, we will add life-like sound effects to a video clip.
Here, you will find project descriptions and constraints, the files necessary to complete each project, and how you will be submitting your finished works of art.
The audio of a digital media project can either make or break its effectiveness. Appealing, purposeful sound can take productions to the next level, while inappropriate or out of place audio can take away from the overall success. Knowledge and skills in audio production can be used in a wide variety of industry settings - a few of which we will get to practice in this unit. You will start out by editing spoken word and adding special effects to create persuasive radio advertisements. Then you will use your creativeness to produce an original music track and create a complete music album with a group of your peers. Finally, you will add sound effects and background music to an otherwise silent video to help bring it to life.

Billy Bob ProjectSometimes it is easy to forget that audio production is not only recording and editing music tracks, but also includes editing spoken word. This type of skill is used to create audio books, recording voice-overs for commercials and movies, and especially to produce radio broadcasts and advertisements.
You have been hired as an audio editor for Commercials Incorporated. They want you to create a commercial for a car lot. They have provided you with the voice over (VO) and final script. In this project, you will edit a raw voice recording to match a script. Your client is Billy Bob's Auto Warehouse. You have his original recording (as you will see, Mr. Billy Bob is not so good at recording a commercial) and the written script of what the radio commercial should say exactly. As you learn how to cut and splice clips in GarageBand, arrange Billy Bob's recording in the correct order. When you have matched the script, add sound effects and background music to make the production appealing and persuasive. Remember to match the script exactly! Remember the background music should fit your target audience and not overpower the voice-over. As you work, save your project as a GarageBand project file (.BAND) and name it last name +first initial + billybob. When you are finished, export it using Share>Export Song to Disk menu and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: pettywbillybob.MP3). Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Monster Truck ProjectNow that you have learned a few basic tools and features of GarageBand, you will apply that knowledge in this project. As you may notice when listening to the radio, the advertisements incorporate special track effects like echo and reverb to help grab attention and persuade the audience.
You have been hired as an audio editor for Monster Trucks Incorporated. They want you to edit a commercial for the upcoming tour. In this project, you will learn how to add special effects to the tracks of audio in GarageBand, as well as further incorporate sound effects and background music to help your radio advertisements sound appealing and persuasive. Your client is Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC. They are hosting a monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling match (fun for adults and children!). You have been given a raw recording of the commercial, a voice-over from Elmo talking trash to Big Bird, and a sound effect or two. You have also been provided with the final script of the commercial. Your job is to cut and splice the original audio recording to match the script, then add in some excerpts from Elmo's voice-over. This time, every individual clip that you splice needs to be on its own track in GarageBand. You will use the software to add special effects like track panning, echo, reverb, and others. Finally, you will incorporate sound effects and background music to help persuade your audience to attend the monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling tournament. As you work, save your project as a GarageBand project file (.BAND) and name it last name +first initial + monster. When you are finished, export it using Share>Export Song to Disk menu and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: pettywmonster.MP3). Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Group Music AulbumThe ability to work cooperatively in a group is something that you will have to practice no matter what type of job you have in the future. In this project, you will team up with a group of your classmates to create an original album - complete with song tracks from each member - and a printed CD cover designed in Photoshop.
The GarageBand software has an extensive built-in library of music loops that can be selected and assembled to produce an attractive, professional sounding song track. It also has the ability to record music from an instrument and add all types of special effects and sound equalization. After creating 2 songs on your classroom computer, you will team up with your group members to design an album cover and track list. As you work, save your project as a GarageBand project file (.BAND) and name it last name +first initial + song1 (song2 for the second song). When you are finished, export it using Share>Export Song to Disk menu and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: pettywsong1.MP3). Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! When you have finished your two original songs, use the Peer Evaluation Survey (see link on the right) to rate your group members' contributions to the completion of the album. Please be honest! Your responses are totally anonymous. |
